I've seen most of the winners from the 2000's and a few more from previous years. I just finished watching the very first winner, "Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans". It was made in 1927 and is SILENT! I rented it from Netflix and luckily it came double sided so I could watch the side with music attached to it.

Overall, I don't think it was that bad. It was the same story you still see today, there's the married couple who are happy until "the other woman" comes along and ruins things...shame shame.
